Foundations of Dance is a music and movement based program designed to build a strong base of the fundamental skills required for future dance classes.
Dance and music are inseparable. Musicality, the ability of a dancer to connect to and interpret music, is an invaluable skill. The concepts of beat, rhythm and tempo are built upon in each age level. These concepts are explored through movement, the playing of musical instruments, and rhythmic literature. In addition, listening activities strengthen auditory awareness (Is the drum playing?) and auditory discrimination (What rhythm is the drum playing?).
Understanding the relationship between our bodies and the space around us is an essential element of dance. Through directed and interpretive movements, students develop spatial and body awareness, balance, and enhance motor skills.
Partnering and circle games allow children to experience the social aspects of dance and music while learning boundaries and inhibitory control. Classroom etiquette and appropriate interaction with other dancers are gently reinforced.
Creativity, an integral part of dance, is encouraged and nurtured in each class. With movement, music, drama and instrumental exploration, we foster self-esteem and confidence and instill a sense of freedom of movement that will complement any style of dance studied in the coming years.
While this program is a serious introduction to the elements of music and dance, it is...above all...FUN!
