Northridge Dance Center offers Ballet classes rooted primarily in the Cecchetti Method, which focuses on the correct alignment and use of the anatomy to maximize a dancer's safety and athletic longevity. NDC also integrates the terminology and stylings of other Ballet techniques, (such as Vaganova and RAD), from time to time, in an effort to provide students with a well-rounded education.
Northridge Dance Center offers a technique-based jazz program to its students, focusing on building strength, flexibility and a strong vocabulary of jazz movement. Our jazz classes include warm-ups to train and tone the body, progressions to sharpen the dancers' skills in extensions, turns, leaps, and mind-body connection and combinations to help students adapt to classical and contemporary styles of jazz, as well as to enhance their memorization skills.
Teen Ballet and Jazz
This program is for students 13+ years in age who have little to no dance experience, who have spent years away from dancing, or who are looking to try something new! These beginning level classes will move at a faster pace than levels designed for younger students. You can build your basis of dance skills and knowledge for school performances, to find your inner artist and to make new friends!
Ballet - All foundation level Ballet terminology and technique will be taught, as well as beginning to touch on performance aspects to dancing such as stage presence.
Jazz - All foundation level Jazz terminology and technique will be taught as well as timing, tempo, and learning to pick up choreography.
Lyrical is a style of dance combining Ballet, jazz and contemporary dance elements for expressive dancing. Lyrical is often taught as part of NDC's jazz and/or contemporary classes.
NDC offers modern classes based largely in Horton technique and including elements of Graham. Our modern technique classes also include studies in universal elements of most modern dance techniques, such as the use of various planes, exploring shifting dynamics, fall and recovery, personal expression, partnering, creative use of space, grounded movement, imagery, improvisation and the inclusion of fundamental modern dance movement.
Contemporary is closely related to modern dance, including elements of current day dance and culture, broken lines, pedestrian movement and emotionally evocative or unusual movement. Contemporary often overlaps modern dance and may also overlap Ballet, jazz and lyrical.
NDC's tap classes include a comprehensive exposure to tap technique, rather than just to tap combinations and movements. Student become familiar with tap terminology, a large number of time steps, combination steps and flash steps and are taught the proper way to execute and control the clarity of their tap sounds. Tap classes are an important part of the performance track student's study, increasing the dancer's ability to shift weight quickly and deepen their understanding of rhythm and tempo.
NDC's Musical Theater classes introduce students to basic vocal, music and acting exercises, basic elements of musical theater dance, such as the perpetuation of story and use of character, props and sets and exposes students to classical musical theater history and repertoire. Students are also given original musical theater choreography. The classes are high-energy and help to create a more diverse, well-rounded and marketable dancer.
